Gaspé Peninsula

June 2012

Bonaventure - Percé - Fort-Prével - Gaspé - Matane

June 28: Bonaventure - Cime Aventures campground

We drive straight through to Bonaventure.
We stopped at the Pointe-à-la-Croix visitor center and spotted a campground that seems to have a bit of life: a lively bar on the Bonaventure River, a pool, canoe trips — the promised land for city folks like us!
The road is pretty. The sea is pretty. You'd almost think you were on the Riviera near Saint-Tropez!
So we stay at the Cime Aventures campground for 2 nights and drink good beers at the bar while chatting with friends on Skype: pure bliss!
The next day, French class is on the agenda: present tense of second-group verbs, plus 2-digit multiplication!
We also take the opportunity to float down the Bonaventure River in an inflatable raft. The sun is shining — lovely!
It's a chance to meet Alice and Fred, 2 French people living in Montreal; we promise to see each other again.

July 1: Fort-Prével

Off to Fort-Prével between Percé and Gaspé: Henri dug up a great campground on a golf course, with a heated pool.
We're craving a swim in water that's... warm!
We end up spending 2 nights there.
Route 132 is magnificent between Bonaventure and Percé.
The kids take advantage of the stop to have an intro golf lesson (thanks to Simon, the instructor, for his patience!).
Meanwhile, the parents enjoy 45 minutes of pure bliss, just the two of us. It's nice to be a couple too!
The weather is milder, but it's not exactly a heat wave yet.

One question haunts us: park or no park? (Gaspésie National Park, that is.)
Well, no — we keep going. The great outdoors is beautiful, but we're craving a city (and Nespresso).
On July 3, we find a nice spot to camp by the ocean in Marsoui, and get to meet Julie and her 2 kids.
Unfortunately, a town employee comes to kick us out (a first) around 5 p.m., and we end up spending the night by Route 132 (the noise those trucks make is insane) at a picnic area(!)
We take off the next day at 5 a.m. and catch the 11 a.m. ferry from Matane to Godbout.
2 hours to cross the St. Lawrence on a ferry, with KIFONS down in the hold!

We really made the most of the Gaspé Peninsula and its roads between sea and mountains. It's truly magnificent.
